Dear Agent,

I’ve read you’re interested in stories with socioeconomic diversity and would like to offer my manuscript, HOW CAN I GET A BED FOR BEAR? for your consideration.

Danny clutches his teddy bear and says goodbye to his home while Mama reassures him that “home” is a feeling they can take with them. He keeps Bear and the pillow that is Bear’s bed close by as they try to feel “home” at Aunt Vicki’s. But soon, they must move to Uncle Mike’s and then to a shelter. When they arrive, Danny discovers Bear’s pillow is missing. A search determines it is lost for good, and Danny knows nothing will ever feel right until he can find a bed for Bear.

HOW CAN I GET A BED FOR BEAR? is a 760-word picture book for children ages 3-7. As per contest guidelines, the first 50 words are pasted in below. 

I have other polished picture book manuscripts I can send upon request. My middle grade novel, PAYMENT TO THE DESERT, received Third Place in Willamette Writers’ 2015 Kay Snow YA and Middle Grade Fiction Competition—Roland Smith Award—and placed in three additional literary contests last year. A short story was a finalist for the 2016 Little Tokyo Historical Society Short Story Contest. I am a member of SCBWI.

I say goodbye to my bed and my home. Bear almost cries so I hug him tight.

“I want to stay here.”

“Danny.” Mama wipes her face. “Home isn’t this apartment, it’s a feeling we have inside. We can take it with us.”

“But it’s not home if my bed’s not there.”
