Every Saturday for as long as she can remember, a girl and her grandfather have played catch together. Until one Saturday, they didn’t. As her grandfather heals in the hospital, the girl watches and wonders if they’ll ever play together again. When her grandfather’s rehabilitation isn’t going as well as they hoped, the girl must figure out how to motivate her grandfather to keep trying and keep hoping for a future of Saturday pitches.

The Perfect Pitch is a 535-word picture book for fans of Kelly Starling-Lyons’s Tea Cakes for Tosh (Putnam, 2012) and Lauren Castillo’s Nana in the City (Clarion, 2014). 

I am a SCBWI member, active in a critique group, a participant of Tara Lazar’s PiBoIdMo/Storystorm and KidLitSummerSchool, and a former public school teacher. I also completed the SCBWI Carolinas 2015 Mentor Program under the mentorship of author Kristy Dempsey. 

I have additional picture books completed, if interested, as well as a middle grade project completed.

It was our favorite thing.

Feeling the threaded stitches across our fingertips,

Smelling the worn leather under our noses,

Hearing the pop of ball into glove after a just-right throw.

Every Saturday.

After we warmed up, he called out pitches.

A fastball: “Tight and straight.”

A curveball: “Twist and let it slide.”
