PBParty 11: BABANNE'S BASKET, Multi-cultural PB

Title: BABANNE’S BASKET
Genre:  Multi-cultural picture book
Word Count: 550

Query:

Dear Michelle and Sharon,

Thank you so much for running #PBParty.

In Babanne’s BasketAyla, a young Turkish girl, can count on two things every day: her grandmother’s smiling face appearing in the 4th floor window of their apartment building in Istanbul, and a surprise in the basket that Babanne slowly lowers down to the lot where Ayla is usually playing. When Babanne passes away, Ayla is devastated and distraught. Is there anything than can help fill the huge hole in Ayla’s heart?

This touching picture book is a universal story of love and loss and the healing powers of tradition. Babanne’s Basket accomplishes two major things: helping children cope with the death of a grandparent in an uplifting way, and highlighting the best of Turkish culture. After living in Istanbul for six years, becoming a dual citizen, and having three kids with my Turkish husband, I wrote Babanne’s Basket as a tribute to the powerful family connections and the poignant customs of that beautiful country.

Thank you for your consideration, and I hope to hear from you soon.

FIRST 50 WORDS:

Ayla’s favorite person in the world was her babanne, who was very old and very wise.

Her favorite thing was Babanne’s old, worn basket, especially when it contained those special secret-recipe pinwheel cookies, which always tasted like a hug from her grandma.

And her favorite place was the lot behind her apartment building.
