Query Kombat 2016 Free Pass!

Free Pass! Free Pass!

I really love doing these! It's like a random act of kindness. It allows one person who might not have made it into the contest to have a shot at the agents. The free pass winner will skip the slush and become one of my final picks for #QueryKombat!

One person who could use a little extra help is able to get constructive comments from the judges!

It's the great equalizer!

And you know what? Last year I used a random generator or the rafflecopter to pick a winner, and that winner became the runner up for the WHOLE contest! Isn't that awesome. She got an agent and is now one of our judges! All from a Free Pass!

That's the way to hit it out of the ballpark!

So here we go:

I want you to leave a comment on this post about where your main character would go for a vacation. Not where they would go to escape. But where they would go to see something that interests them or to rest after everything is over. (And picking Wrigley Field is brown nosing, not that there is anything wrong with that.)

You also need to use the rafflecopter to record that you left a comment. The rafflecopter will pick the winner. There will be additional options to score more entries and raise your chances. They are options having to do with my books and that's why they are optional, but I appreciate your support! (I've been ignoring my book promo in order to, you know, invite agents and find amazing judges. Because contests are a blast!)

This free pass will stay open until May 6th. That gives you three weeks. What are you waiting for--get to entering!

AND BE SURE TO ENTER FOR LAURA'S FREE PASS ALSO!

And good luck!

  1. Kiara Talwar would go on vacation to a cabin in the middle of the woods or mountains, preferably near some body of water.

  2. Each of my four main characters would pick somewhere different. Mia would choose Japan. It's one of the few places in Asia she's never been, and she'd be curious to go up to Hokkaido during the summer, each chocolate, see the flowers, and relax. Derek, her twin, would choose to travel to Aspen, Colorado. He isn't a huge fan of travel, so his vacation would be somewhere close. Aspen is pretty with lots of hikes and not a lot of people. Cody, likewise, isn't a huge fan of traveling. But, in his heart, he's always wanted to visit Greece, where his mother's family comes from. He's not big on vacation, so he'd be out there learning about the culture, the history, and the language. Blair would vacation in Brazil. Warm beaches, good food, and an overall friendly atmosphere.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Meredith wouldn't be able to wrap her head around a real vacation. If she could, she'd pick somewhere tropical. Except truly, she'd never be able to dream that big, so she'd probably pick a day trip to Chicago to check out the Sears Tower.

  4. Verity Player ends her adventures at home, slumped next to the woodburning stove, with a filthy new-year hangover.

If she could be persuaded to budge (which in itself is no racing certainty!) she would love to go to St Petersburg, where her husband is presently visiting his family, and thence on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Mongolia. Because she loves forests. And railways.

And because Mongolia may still have what China has lost.

  5. Nile would go to the desert, to Haleos' palace. She found a real home there, and for the first time in her life, she got a taste of happiness.

Lily would go to New York in order to get her memories back.

Shadow has been everywhere, and yet she has never felt like she belongs. Until she met Krat. He makes her laugh, so for a while, Shadow would follow him wherever he went.

    1. Obid would ride his winged lion beyond the bounds of Vzussi, survey the land, and vacation at the beach with the whitest sand and clearest water.

  7. Cole would stay in a city that was close enough to somewhere he could go rock climbing during the day, then out to see bands at night.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Violet would go to England to see her favorite boy band in their natural habitat.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Quinn would go home to New Orleans to see her family.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Will & Trevor would go to the ocean. No one on their continent is allowed within 25 miles of the coast.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Astrid would visit Butchart Gardens in Canada. Her mother taught her and her sister hundreds of plant names and uses before she died, and it's that connection with nature and her mother that eventually helps Astrid defeat the enemy and save herself. In a place like Butchart, she could spend the day in a quiet corner of the colorful gardens, naming species until sunset, closer to her mother than she's been in years.

  12. Amelia would hunt Anthony Rizzo down from whatever ballpark he's playing at and take him out for pizza. Watching baseball is the one thing that's kept her sane in all her years of running and Rizzo is her man. Come to think of it, she probably owes him a beer to go with that slice.

    ReplyDelete
  13. My character wouldn't care where he went, so long as his best friend Dion was into the destination!

    ReplyDelete
  14. My main character is a 12-year-old girl named Carly who is totally into writing fan fiction. So she would go to Japan because that's where her favorite book series takes place.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rozalie would love to visit Japan to immerse herself in the culture, and show her toddler, Damien, the wonders she sees whenever she flickers through a Japanese book.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nora would go to Paris so she can practice her French while admiring the historical sites.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Áine would spend her vacation in a city with an excellent, old library. She'd spend her days poring over old texts and her nights at the most excellent eating establishments the city had to offer. Veldras would do the same, only he would spend a few hours a day wandering the forest trails just outside the city.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gaia would go to the same world where she has her adventures. She'd pick that over a vacation any day. So the book sorta *is* her vacation...

  19. My MC favorite vacation location would be pretty much anywhere that she can be left to her own devices, not to mention avoiding a tan.

    ReplyDelete
  20. In a world where dreams, not nightmares, could actually come true, Deniz Petrosyan would travel to England, there to visit the places that inspired Jane Austen, and the Bronte sisters, and Dickens. To wander, all touristy and lost, through London - to ride one of those red buses, and eat fish and chips in a pub...to sniff old books in a book sellers stall...that would be heaven. She would visit old castles and cathedrals, and imagine a time in which she could enter and claim sanctuary and never have to leave.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My MC would want to drive across the country to NYC but since she's a senior in high school and not rebellious enough to try, she'd drive to her favorite beach park on Puget Sound with a few of her friends.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Amanda would take a train to Philadelphia to run the Broad Street Run and catch the Phillies game in early May. Living in Falmouth, Massachusetts is great, but the suburbs of Philadelphia is her home. And the Broad Street Run is still the greatest road race in America.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My MC would enjoy taking her mother to a big city and showing her a good time. Buying her all the things she could never afford as she raised her daughter alone.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My MC Barrie would hit a spa -- and not just any spa: Miraval, a place Oprah has touted. She would get the works: a massage, a facial, a mani-pedi, a hair cut, and pretty much any other treatment available to her. Also: she would not bring anything that could potentially hook her up to the internet. No email. Nope. And dear G-d in heaven, don't make that girl eat sushi. (You'd have to read the book to know why ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Priscilla would enjoy going to the Anamosa Pumpkinfest in Anamosa, Iowa, to watch the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off...a 1,665.5 lbs. pumpkin is something to see!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Allie would find any place of rest and relaxation ok so long as she was there with Spooky, but for preferences, she'd go back to the castle of Dragon Brunelles, so that she can spend the day reading in his many gardens, the evening feasting and talking at his cornucopia-like table and the night stargazing through his long-distance-glasses.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My 3rd-grade MC would visit Disney World, with her assistance dog by her side.

    ReplyDelete
  28. My main character would go to Japan to check out all the cherry blossoms!

    ReplyDelete
  29. My MC would wander. Anywhere will do, as long as it's quiet, lonely, and beautiful. The Oregon Coast in the fall would be perfect, with numb fingers holding hot coffee in the briny air.

    ReplyDelete
  30. My MC, Quinn, would flip out if she could go to the The Library of The Admont Abbey in Austria. It's a beautiful building full of books that looks like it was transported out of a fairy tale. What give wouldn't love a trip like that?

    ReplyDelete
  31. For my MC, Kylie would love to go place tropical for her vacation hideout. She would board the Yellow Taxi Airplane from Naples, Florida to Jamaica. She would meditate and decompress, swim with dolphins and sharks, and stay away from snakes, the reptiles and of the human variety. Peace and quiet with the gorgeous weather and not worry about her thesis, her grant, and everyday life. And she would bring Aidan with her to solidify their newfound relationship.

  36. My main character would love to go to the world of Death for vacation, so she can spend time with all the ones that have long passed. So many lives lost that she feels guilty for. (Ironically, she has the power to do it too.)

  37. John Rush has always wanted to go deep sea fishing. He loves the calming effects of clear blue water. The closer to Columbia, the better - he has always intended to research his family tree and this is the perfect place to start.

  41. Acelya dreams of visiting Istanbul, Turkey! Her great-great-great-great-great grandmother traveled from Turkey over a hundred years ago to establish a new life on Greenland.

    ReplyDelete
  42. She would climb Mount Loral with Broq. He would tease her the whole way and say she was too young to climb mountains. They would sit down on the highest point and wait for the darkness to spread across the sky. And she would count the stars. No buildings or clouds to hinder her counting. No wall to block her view. And perhaps Professor Ciero would prove her wrong. Maybe there are more than 350 of them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sandy Jo has been living her life through the lens of what she needed to do versus what she wanted to do. If she were given a free pass to unwind, she'd fly to Colorado, or wherever her best friend was from the good ol' days in a moment's notice. She can only truly unwind being with someone who knew without a doubt who she used to be, even if she was a little lost today.

She'd tour everything, get into small fights on the way, and enjoy the absolute freedom and beauty of their journey, along with the opportunity to just spend time with Ashbel after everything's done. Ashbel would take her flying as he'd promised, then to the sea, where he'd teach her to swim, and they would reunite with the rest of their makeshift family somewhere along the way.

  50. Any where on a coastline with magnificent crashing waves

    ReplyDelete
  51. My main character Selene would find the nearest island and stay there for months after the crap she's been through. She's used to warm weather, but would love a tropical island to sip margaritas on, and take lovely long swims in the ocean!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Xavier would go to Ireland. He'd hope to take Wend with him. In fact, there's a line in my book about this where he makes that very offer. She thinks he's kidding, of course, but he wasn't.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

If this thing with Ryan works out, she would like to take him with her.

  56. Tough one, seeing as that my main character has BEEN on vacation for 12 years, which, in a roundabout way, is the root of his problem. But if he had to leave Maine (Vacationland), probably . . . Greece?

    ReplyDelete
  57. My MC would go back to middle school.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The good thing is my protagonist lives in a castle overlooking the sea, but the bad thing is the castle is filled with manipulative, clawing mystics hungry for power. So she would go on vacation out in the country on unspoiled land where she and her mind can be free from the intrigue.

    -Tamara Girardi

  59. Since she's never been on an airplane in her life, Masha would pack one or two T-shirts, put on the hiking boots her Mom bought her as a gag gift, and go visit every and any ruins she could find. Not that she's much of a history buff, but her video game characters always end up in a decaying temple or fortress, fighting for their lives. Since she's bent on being a video game designer, she has to get inspiration straight from the source, right? South America, Asia, Europe, Africa, here she comes--after winning the lottery or something, cause her dreams might be big, but her pocket's tiny.

    ReplyDelete

Her home was located near the Mount Merapi and she missed seeing all the ritual processions leading up to its peak, which often passed in front of her home. After she learned that her parents had passed away, she need this home more than ever.

She'd end in Amherst, where she'd pay tribute to the woman who's words helped her through it all--the recluse poet Emily Dickinson, who's work she poets when she's nervous. Then, back to the open road. That pair of boots is out there somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  86. My MC would take a trip to Ireland, where he was born. He left at the age of 3 and has never had the opportunity to return.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Grace would pack her four favorite t-shirts (they are all exactly the same), snag her best friend Pip and head to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janiero. On arrival, the girls would plant themselves outside the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team locker room. Grace MUST HAVE Carli Lloyd’s signature and Pip will have her eyes out for Sydney Leroux. She'd love nothing more than to completely immerse herself in the country's culture with her best friend, and possibly her best friend's brother... if they're getting along that day!

  126. My main character would probably return to her roots and visit Romania. As a first generation born outside of the motherland, she'd go to visit with distant relatives, and learn more about the culture she's part of. Because she's a vampire, there's also the appeal of Castle Bran and the origins of Dracula, which she'd no doubt want to learn more about.

  130. I’ve never met my grandmother in Sweden, I’ve only seen pictures. Actually flying to Sweden to meet my dad’s family would be amazing. But, honestly? I just received an actual castle in Ireland as tribute for becoming Princess of the Fae-born, and I’ve wanted my own castle since I was a little girl. Don’t tell Dad.

  131. My character Joseph would go to Paris. His parents are French, so he already speaks the language. He also loves music, opera in particular--he'd attend one nearly every night!

  132. Livy would probably go to Disneyland. Since she lives in a different realm, the idea of a princess visiting a fantasy-and-magic-themed amusement park would be absolutely hysterical and fascinating to her. She is adventurous, too, so she would get a kick out of the roller coasters.

  139. Shannon Sloan, the main character in THE TRUST GAME, has been obsessed with visiting Varanasi ever since she she learned that the remains of her murdered mentor, Alessandra "Sandri" Patel, were being flown there for a traditional Hindu cremation - followed by a scattering of ashes, along the banks of the Ganges River. Shannon adored and practically worshipped Sandri for the nearly four years that they worked together at Bemelmans Brothers Law Firm in NYC, but it wasn't until Sandri was found murdered in a Tribeca hotel room that Shannon began to recognize just how little she really knew about her beloved, now-deceased, boss.
