PBParty 19: WILLA'S FLYING STARS, Character Driven PB

Title: WILLA’S FLYING STARS
Genre: Character driven, fiction picture book
Word Count: 510

Query:

Dear Agent,

A tool belt toting, but temperamental girl determined to fly with shooting stars makes her way to the sky with a little help from Grandma. WILLA’S FLYING STARS is a 510 word fiction, picture book accompanied by a 100 word Author’s Note; A Guide to Watching a Meteor Shower.  It is one of two completed stories about WILLA.

Inspired by family tradition and in the spirit of FANCY NANCY meets BOB THE BUILDER, WILLA’S FLYING STARS is about ingenuity, compromise, and thinking outside the box.

In an effort to build an audience with those who purchase picture books, I created my personal essay blog Red said what? in September 2013 (+1,100 followers).  I was named a 2015 BlogHer Voice of the Year.  My work has been awarded by The 83rd and 84th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition and has appeared in Brain Child MagazineMamalodeClub Mid (Scary Mommy)InterFaithFamily.com (September 2015),and Your Tango (TBD).

I am also a member of SCBWI, early childhood and elementary educator, and the mother of two boys who has other picture book as well as an adult, nonfiction project in my resume that may be of interest.  Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.  I look forward to the possibility of discussing my work directly.

First 50 Words:

The week the carnival came to town, Willa and her family camped out to count shooting stars. It was her favorite summer tradition.

“This year I’m big enough to stay awake all night,” Willa said.

Grandma grinned. “Do you have your binoculars?”

Willa reached into her tool belt. “Check.”

“Popcorn?”
